FUN & GAMES
As I was diagnosed with “Working age Dementia” or “early onset Alzheimer’s, I never understood why so many names are used, for a part of my brain that is struggling to manage anymore. People make so many assumptions that losing a part of the brain will immediately turn you into a vegetable. “He’s lost his marbles, ”who ever coined that expression? What on earth does marbles resemble!, and yet we know what they mean.!
The strange thing that I have now find, is that the old memories are often still there; it’s just what happened last week is impossible to remember. So looking back with fondness of our family life, like so many others; entertainment was usually family game of cards, domino’s, monopoly and draughts. This always created an atmosphere of fun, enjoyment and challenging and even becoming competitive.
These memories were special life when you marry and bring up your own children, you have a little sadness when they show no interest in Ludo and want to play with scalextric or more high tech games. Now you’ve got grandchildren and they sit in front of screens. You tell them about how you used to play marbles skipping, snakes & ladders and rounders.
Yes!, we’re getting older, all that really matters is that we enjoy ourselves. NOW IS OUR TIME AGAIN, to bring out the old games and remember how we had fun in the simple ways, sharing, caring, laughing. We may not be able to skip anymore, but talking about where we lived and how we could play in the streets without fear, parents not watching our every move and only seeing us when tea was ready. Was it a different way of schooling in those days? I think not, it was the communities, close neighbours, shops on the corner, a much closer social life. That’s something lacking today, but WE recreate these feelings at our group meetings every 3rd Thursday of the month at:
